Greenham Barton where a dendrochronology report will be undertaken funded by Historic England. Jacobean House in Somerset, the hammerbeam roof of which was dated by dendrochronology. Dating a building is generally undertaken by identifying architectural details that indicate the period when buildings of that style were being constructed. This will provide a date range when the building is likely to have been built. To gain a more accurate picture of the date of construction, it is possible to use dendrochronology, or the study of tree rings, to give an insight into the history of the timber used in the construction of the building. As trees grow the growing conditions in the area affect the rings that form. The resulting cross section shows differing patterns of rings which indicate growing conditions year on year. From years of studying tree rings a database of information now exists which maps tree ring patterns across the country. This means that timber in a property can be examined to find matches in tree ring patterns from similar trees in the local area.

Tackling this chore of dating your antique home is, in many cases, a daunting task, though usually not an insurmountable one. The first thing you need to realize is that the process involves a three-tiered approach. Indeed, to accurately date your house you should consider the information available at your local historical society, deed and probate research at the county level, and a structural analysis of the building itself.
To get started, your local historical society is likely to have at least some general information on your house, if not a more detailed profile. When gathering this information, however, keep in mind that these records are not always accurate. It is not uncommon for a town history or other records within an historical society to be incorrect regarding dates or family names associated with a given house.
Even when mistakes have been made, however, the information you retrieve from your local historical society is potentially valuable. It will at the very least serve as a good reference point for your next tier of research: deeds and probate. Though some towns and cities may keep records differently, a common place to have them stored is at the county court house.

The trouble with inscriptions, useful though they are, is that you cannot be sure that they are right many have been added by later owners or that they date more than a particular feature or phase of development.
The datestone has to be treated with the same critical eye as the rest of the building. Historic buildings need historians. That might seem axiomatic, but surprisingly few of the half million or so listed buildings have ever been thoroughly investigated. The rise of a specialist role of architectural historian has gone hand-in-hand with the growth of the conservation movement over the last half-century. What do architectural historians do?
How can they contribute both to an understanding of architecture of all periods and to the selection of what we should seek to conserve? Architectural historians find out about buildings; who built them and when; what they were for; how they have been altered and take the form they do now; what people and events have been associated with them.
